Start with the measurement destination

Google Ads can append a Google Click Identifier, or gclid, when auto-tagging is enabled. That identifier lets compatible Google measurement products associate the click with detailed ad data. Manual UTM parameters are readable campaign labels carried in the URL and can support analytics tools, warehouses, and reporting outside that integration.

This is not a universal either-or choice. Keep auto-tagging enabled when your Google Ads and analytics setup relies on GCLID, and add manual UTMs when another destination needs explicit source, medium, and campaign values. Verify how your own analytics property prioritizes auto-tagged and manual values before standardizing the final template.

A dependable Google Ads field map

utm_source=google
Use the platform name consistently. Do not alternate among google, google_ads, and adwords for equivalent traffic.
utm_medium=cpc
cpc is a widely used paid-search value. paid_search can also work when it is your documented standard; choose one and keep it stable.
utm_campaign
Name the business initiative or map a controlled Google Ads campaign name. Keep the result useful outside the ad platform.
utm_term
Use for the paid keyword or a deliberately selected targeting label when that detail is available and useful.
utm_content
Distinguish an ad, asset, creative message, or experiment. Choose one semantic meaning and document it.

The UTM parameters guide explains the general role of each field. The naming conventions guidehelps turn this mapping into an approved vocabulary.

Google Ads naming examples

Branded search campaign

Manual campaign labelshttps://example.com/pricing?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=2026_brand_search_us&utm_term=brand_exact&utm_content=text_ad_a

Non-brand product campaign

Category landing pagehttps://example.com/running?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_campaign=2026_running_shoes_us&utm_term=trail_shoes&utm_content=value_prop_b

These examples demonstrate two valid medium vocabularies, not a recommendation to mix them. Select either cpc or paid_search for equivalent paid-search traffic across the account.

Implementation checklist

  1. Confirm the analytics requirement. Record which tools need GCLID, UTMs, or both.
  2. Choose one source and medium pair. Default to google / cpc, or use the existing governed taxonomy.
  3. Define term and content. Decide whether they represent keywords, targeting, ads, or creatives before creating templates.
  4. Preserve parameters. Test tracking templates, redirects, consent flows, and the final landing page with both UTM fields and GCLID present.
  5. Validate reporting. Make a controlled test click and confirm the expected values in each analytics destination before launch.

Common Google Ads UTM mistakes

  • Disabling auto-tagging just because UTMs exist. Manual labels may not carry the detailed integration data supplied through GCLID.
  • Assuming precedence is identical everywhere. GA4 and non-Google tools may process auto-tagged and manual fields differently.
  • Mixing medium values. cpc, ppc, and paid_search can fragment the same channel.
  • Letting a redirect drop GCLID or UTMs. Test the complete click path, not only the URL entered in the ad platform.
  • Putting every detail into campaign. Keep keyword and creative differences in the optional fields when they serve a reporting need.
  • Using ungoverned dynamic names. Platform macros can reproduce inconsistent capitalization and separators at scale.

Create the manual UTM portion

Build a correctly encoded URL with the agreed Google Ads values, then place it in the appropriate final URL or tracking-template workflow. Test the published configuration with auto-tagging enabled when your measurement plan requires GCLID.
