The short version
What is a UTM builder?
A UTM builder adds campaign parameters to a destination URL without making you assemble the query string by hand. Those labels give analytics tools consistent source, channel, campaign, and optional creative context when someone follows the link.
How to create a UTM link in four steps
- Paste the destination. Use the full page URL you want people to visit.
- Name the traffic. Add a source, medium, and campaign so the visit has useful context.
- Add optional detail. Use term for a keyword or audience and content for a creative or placement variant.
- Copy and check. Review the generated URL, then test it before publishing the campaign.
What each UTM field means
utm_source- Identifies where the visit came from, such as google, linkedin, or newsletter.
utm_medium- Describes the channel type, such as cpc, social, or email.
utm_campaign- Groups links under the initiative you want to measure, such as autumn_launch.
utm_term- Optionally records a paid-search keyword or another deliberate targeting detail.
utm_content- Optionally distinguishes creatives, placements, buttons, or links in the same campaign.
For a deeper explanation, read the UTM parameters guide.
Example tagged URL
https://example.com/launch?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumn_launch&utm_content=hero_buttonIn GA4, these values can populate acquisition dimensions after a visitor opens the link. The builder does not configure GA4 or guarantee attribution: the destination site still needs a working GA4 installation, and reports may take time to process.
Keep campaign names consistent
Prefer lowercase values and one separator, such as an underscore. Analytics may treat Email, email, and e-mail as separate labels. A short written convention keeps reports easier to group; see the UTM naming conventions guide.
Apply the fields to each channel
The builder encodes the same five fields for every link, but the right values depend on the channel and reporting system. Use the channel playbooks to make those decisions before generating a URL.
Common UTM mistakes to avoid
- Changing capitalization or separators for the same source and medium.
- Using vague campaign names that will not make sense in a future report.
- Adding UTM parameters to internal links and overwriting the original acquisition context.
- Publishing without opening the final URL and checking the destination.
- Putting personal or sensitive information into campaign parameters visible in the URL.
UTM builder FAQ
Do I need every UTM parameter?
No. Source, medium, and campaign provide a useful baseline. Add term and content only when they answer a reporting question.
Does the builder shorten or track my link?
No. The free builder creates the tagged URL in your browser. It does not visit the destination, shorten the link, or save the values.
Can I paste a URL that already has query parameters?
Yes. UTMora keeps unrelated query parameters and the page fragment while replacing existing UTM parameters with one clean set.
Where do UTM visits appear in GA4?
After someone uses the tagged link, GA4 can use the campaign values in its acquisition reports. Reporting depends on the destination site's GA4 setup and data processing.
